List of browsers still working on old Mac OsX Platforms 10.7+

icab browser --> http://www.icab.de/
Unfortunately it has several issues with several sites on my osx 10.8.4 system and it needs quite some cpu resources.

spiderweb browser --> https://randommacstuff.blogspot.com/p/spiderweb-browser.html
Works actually pretty well on my system. Although I haven't tested it for long so far!

ArcticFox browser --> https://github.com/wicknix/Arctic-Fox/wiki/Downloads
Is currently doing it's job.

Waterfox browser --> https://www.waterfox.net/
So far my favorite! Snappy, modern and upradable with a vast number of mozilla addons!

selective Tab choice in Seamonkey Browser

How to select tabs in seamonkey with CMD + Number hotkey like in Firefox-Browser?

After quite some time searching for appropriate addons or tweaks in the about:config of seamonkey I finally just copied the commands from firefox to seamonkey.

Because I had such struggle to get seamonkey to a state I prefer for everyday use I’ll give here my step-by-step workaround.

  1. Install Addon to simple change the hotkeys in seamonkey –> Dorando keyconfig
  2. Disable all ⌘1…8 (9) hotkeys in Dorando keyconfig (actually seamonkey uses only ⌘1, ⌘2, ⌘4, ⌘5 and ⌘9)
  3. Add new keys in Dorando keyconfig
    1. Name it as you prefer –> maybe: key_selectTab1
    2. Insert following code for Tab 1: gBrowser.selectTabAtIndex(0, event);
    3. Insert the appropriate key-combination! eg for Tab1 –> ⌘1
    4. Click –> Apply
    5. Do the same for all other keys you want to change. Just change the figure in the brackets of the code.
      1. gBrowser.selectTabAtIndex(0, event); = Tab1
      2. gBrowser.selectTabAtIndex(1, event); = Tab2
      3. gBrowser.selectTabAtIndex(2, event); = Tab3
      4. gBrowser.selectTabAtIndex(3, event); = Tab4…
  4. close the addon and use seamonkey tab hotkeys like in firefox!

Since some OS versions are no longer supported by popular browsers, seamonkey is one of the few last-resorts to surf the web in a proper way.

unleash the N5 (cyanogenmod on Nexus 5 with HDR+ Camera)

How to install cyanogenmod on Nexus 5 with working HDR+

Since I bought my Nexus 5 I was very satisfied with my stock-android but sometimes I hated it to let all the app’s get control over whatever they want (not need!). And do some tweaks by the way…

So I thought maybe root, flash…put a custom rom.

First of all… I like the cam of the N5. In my very personal opinion the HDR+ is great (slow.. but great) and the photo-sphere is (when you do it proper) so great to share point of views. (–> especially with cardboard:)

Problems with the cam would be a deal-breaker besides a stable system of course.

Ingredients

After some research and try outs I finished my journey at cyanogenmod (cm-11-20141008-SNAPSHOT-M11-hammerhead) with PA Gapps micro (pa_gapps-modular-micro-4.4.2-20140608-signed) because of the camera issues (No HDR, bucking screen/video capture).

To unlock the bootloader, root/flash and install the rom/GApps I used the Nexus root toolkit. (works great but crashes sometimes v. 2.0.4 –> in this case just quit and reopen the program)

Guidance

The Nexus root toolkit is very powerfull and simple. If you need a step by step guidance this will help you!

To install new rom etc… just click in the main-window on Launch and then choose the Flash zip …

Use the configuration suggestions and everything should work great.

After that, log-in in Playstore and install google camera. HDR+ = available!

The idea of this site is to have a short summary of installing cyanogenmod on a Nexus 5 with Lollipop (Android 5.01) installed and to have a solution for the camera issues. Because I spent a lot of time to figure out how to do it in a proper way.

Please be aware that it works for me and I had no problems with my data… but I backed up all I needed with Android file transfer. Do all of this on your own risk!

Hasta luego!

Google Nexus 5 still in use

Since the last post about my smartphone several things changed. Cyanogenmod got replaced by Lineage OS –> https://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/orig-development/rom-lineageos-16-0-nexus-5-t3921162, camera/camera-software within Cyanogenmod for Nexus 5 showed me its limitations and a bunch of new smartphones got released. Although, if I compare the new smarts in a quick shoot-out I am still fine with the HDR+ on the Nexus 5. OK, slow, sometimes inaccurate AF, no nightmode, no tele- nor wide-lense etc. but still for my purposes a solid shooter. To cut a long story short, the best platform for using the camera of the nexus 5 at its best is still stock android (imhp). Unfortunately on an unsupported stage since years.

Anyway, Android is not iOS and so many people are still on old versions instead of the latest. Many, nearly all apps still work on android 6 or even on older versions of the Android family. Just changing the launcher may give your phone a fresh and useful style and could even save some processing resources as well as support your daily tasks. (Nova, Evie, Smart Launcher @ Playstore)

And finally tweaking your system a bit may benefit your device-experience. For example switching off the animations in developer mode, Getting rid of unused apps or exchange resource intensive ones with light versions of them. (eg. maps vs maps go etc.)
